The second round of the new GR Cup, which pits some of South Africa’s top motoring journalists against each other in stock GR Yaris cars, will be taking place at the Zwartkops Raceway on the outskirts of Pretoria this weekend. The first round saw cars.co.za scribe Ashley Oldfield take the honours in both races, but the racing was tight throughout the opening weekend, and more of the same is expected this weekend.
Most, if not all the drivers, know the Zwartkops layout particularly well, having either raced there before, or trained for the GR Cup at the iconic circuit. This should bring the lap times even closer together than at Killarney, where the opening round took place last month.
As before, six motoring journalists will be behind the wheels of the stock GR Yaris cars, including Oldfield, Jeanette Kok-Kritzinger, Thomas Falkiner, Mark Jones and Lerato Matebese. Sean Nurse, who missed Round 1 due to family matters, will get his first taste of the action when he joins the fray this weekend.
A seventh GR Yaris will also be on the grid this weekend, in the hands of a surprise driver who may just shake things up significantly.
The action gets under way with practice on Friday, followed by Qualifying and two races on Saturday. Spectators are welcome to attend the race as per the latest COVID-19 regulations, and tickets can be purchased at the gates.
