ROSSLYN, South Africa (September 27, 2018) – Nissan South Africa is continuing to enrich the lives of South Africans by donating a water borehole system to a children’s day care centre in Hammanskraal, Pretoria.

Hammanskraal in northern Gauteng has been in the grip of an ongoing water crisis that has affected thousands of people. Water in this area is in need of purification and while residents wait for new purifying technology to be implemented, they have been left without potable water.

“According to the United Nations, water is at the core of sustainable development and is critical for socio-economic development, healthy ecosystems and for human survival itself. It is vital for reducing the global burden of disease and improving the health, welfare, and productivity of populations,” said Wonga Mesatywa, Director of Corporate Affairs at Nissan South Africa.

Mesatywa stated that; “Nissan South Africa understands that water is a fundamental human-well being resource and that it is important for communities to have access to this vital resource.”

The Mathudi Day Care Centre in Hammanskraal, which cares for 52 children, reached out to Nissan to assist with the purchase of a much-needed water tank. However, after conducting a needs analysis, Nissan SA decided that much more was required and donated a fully sustainable borehole system

Martha Chauke, Founder of Mathudi Day Care Centre thanked Nissan for this essential service; “As you know, the community has been suffering with no access to water. Nissan has taken a bold step in assisting us with a fully functional borehole system. Hygiene is very important and we are grateful for the assistance and hope that this is the first step in improving the lives of the learners concerned.“

Following the installation of the borehole system, the centre is now sufficiently supplied with clean, fresh water.

Nissan SA, which has a long history of enriching people’s lives through sustainable means, officially handed the borehole system over to the Mathudi Day Care Centre on 27 September 2018. In December 2017, Nissan donated a fully functional water system to Bahlologa Secondary School in Lonsdale, Limpopo.
